Chapter 239: Living in Your Heart (Part 3)
"If you’ve cried enough, let’s discuss business. If you still need to cry more, go ahead; I’ll head back for now."Stellan’s sobbing abruptly stopped. She pulled out a tissue to wipe her nose. "Can we really get the money back?"
"Don’t you believe in my ability?"
"I do."
"Then that’s settled. You just need to cooperate with me."
Stellan felt a glimmer of hope. She nodded, "I’ll do whatever you tell me, as long as we can reclaim the money. I’ll follow your lead."
——
"Mr. Gill, I’m sorry, but the President is extremely busy right now and can’t receive guests."
"Then please inform His Excellency that our Palmer Group’s aid funds are also very busy, and I’m heading back to withdraw them." Elliot Gill’s face tightened, exceptionally serious.
The secretary was taken aback by his words. "Then Mr. Gill, please wait here. I’ll go and request guidance once again."
"Okay."
The secretary hurried back and relayed Elliot Gill’s original words unchanged to the President. Upon hearing them, the President threw a teacup directly, accompanied by a crisp sound as the innocent cup shattered into glass shards.
"He sure dares to speak."
"Who doesn’t think so? There’s always been talk of this young master Gill being quite arrogant. Observing him today truly confirms it. Your Excellency, will you see him?"
"Let him in."
The servant quickly cleaned up the glass shards.
When Elliot Gill entered, the President had already switched to a different mood.
"I’m curious about your reason for visiting this time. Why insist on seeing me?"
"Your Excellency, there’s no need to feign ignorance. In the absence of any evidence regarding the poisoning of Your Highness, you’ve imprisoned my sister. The Palmer Family demands an explanation."
The President’s eyelids twitched. Although he ordered this matter not to be leaked, how did he know about it?!
The only explanation was that there was a Palmer Family spy within the Presidential Mansion.
"Since you’ve mentioned it today, let’s speak plainly. All food imported by Arthur undergoes testing by several appraisers before consumption. These appraisers have been with Arthur for twenty years, their loyalty undeniable. Despite the lack of evidence, the only one with the opportunity to act is Flora, no one else. Moreover, Flora refuses to undergo hypnosis. It’s clear she doesn’t want to prove her innocence; otherwise, she wouldn’t refuse. If she agrees to hypnosis, her innocence would be evident. What do you say?"
"I still need to ask her in person about the specifics. Can I meet with her?"
"Of course, it’s only human nature. I hope you can persuade your sister. Such a significant matter can’t remain unsettled."
"Then please, Your Excellency, have someone lead the way."
The President signaled the secretary to take him.
Elliot Gill’s bodyguards waited outside the Presidential Mansion; he went in alone.
Standing in front of Flora’s detention room, Elliot Gill stepped inside, enveloped by a cold atmosphere that added a chill to his presence.
"Big brother..." Flora stood up.
Elliot Gill walked to her side, noticing her poor condition. He took out a prepared notebook and pen, writing the questions for her to see.
Flora took it, responding to questions about the poisoning.
She denied it, writing back: [I didn’t do it; it’s not my doing.]
He wrote again: [Don’t hide from me; this involves the entire Palmer Family! If you truly didn’t do it, you must prove your innocence with hypnosis.]
Flora bit her lip, then wrote a single word: [Yes.]
Elliot Gill questioned further: [Who is secretly helping you?]
[No one. Arthur said he would create an illusion of death by complication during childbirth. I wanted to act first.]
[I trust this was part of the reason, but someone must be helping you. You couldn’t have obtained those pills alone. Who was it?!]
His gaze was too intense, leaving Flora feeling a chilling pressure.
Flora looked directly at him, and replied, [I bought the pills on the black market. It was my doing, without any mastermind. No matter how many times you ask, it is still the truth.]
[You truly aren’t being honest.] Elliot Gill’s pen moved swiftly, [I know who the mastermind was, and I didn’t reveal it to see if you’re honest with me. I never expected you to protect Jacob Green; you were previously with Lucy Eaton and now with Jacob Green, right?]
Flora widened her eyes, her gaze asking: How do you know?
He responded, [Lewis is my person.]
Upon reading those words, Flora’s world instantly collapsed. She never expected Lewis to be planted by her eldest brother beside her second brother and then come to her; he was actually her brother’s man.
Her eyes grew vacant, and she felt overwhelmingly distressed.
Initially, she believed he sincerely accompanied her, yet he turned out to be someone else’s eyes.
Helping her brother monitor her every move.
[The President has already identified you as responsible. If you don’t want to drag the Palmer Family down and still wish to live, there’s only one path: confess the mastermind. I’ll negotiate with the President to spare your life. Jacob Green won’t come to save you; his intervention would make everything clear.]
Flora shook her head, grabbed the paper and pen to write: [No, I’ll never expose him, not even to death. He’ll certainly save me.]
[You believe in him that much?]
"Yes, big brother, go back. Don’t visit me anymore." Flora shredded all the written notes and flushed them down the toilet. When she came out, Elliot Gill was still there.
"Why haven’t you left?"
"If he doesn’t save you, the day you give birth, will be your death day."
"Even if I die, let me die alone. Why drag down others?" Flora lowered her eyes, "Go and tell mom and dad to act as if they never had a daughter like me."
Elliot Gill raised an eyebrow, "If you die, won’t you think of the child?"
"How can you be so certain I’ll die?" She looked up at him, "I’ll definitely walk out alive; I will."
"Good luck."
This time, he finally left.
Flora lay on the bed, silent tears flowing. Regarding Lewis, she truly trusted him unconditionally.
But little did she know that his protection had ulterior motives.
No wonder after they were involved, he maintained his distance. He likely regarded the incident as merely an accident, while she, on the other hand, took it to heart.
During their daily interactions, his attentiveness made her feel secure.
She even feared dragging him down and handed him a termination notice.
Now this feeling was reminiscent of knowing about Arthur and Stellan’s affairs.
The sensation of betrayal continually surrounded her.
That’s human nature—once trust in someone is fractured, it’s hard to revert to what it was before.
Thinking of the child in her womb, Flora felt her heart wrench.
She knew Jacob Green would never neglect her, but she had no idea when he would rescue her.
Being confined wasn’t painful; after all, Arthur had previously put her on house arrest. The fear lay in being alone every day, with the only one to talk to being the baby in her womb.
