Chapter 386 - 21: Burst Kill Runes Have Been One-Click Matched
Amithren’s words sounded outrageous. It was clearly the Royal Court that had failed to defend its territory, yet he wanted to cut off their kinsmen in the Fallen Land.
But to be fair, that wasn’t really the case.
Demons were not the Great Chaos Enemy. Although from the perspective of the central government of the Realm of Order, there was no difference between the two, as beings on the side of Order, the Celestial God’s Shadow wouldn’t just slaughter all the mortals in their territory. They were more inclined to convert mortals into their own believers.
Most of the original inhabitants who could flee had already fled. Those who couldn’t would keep their heads down, living under Demon rule and looking south for the Royal Court’s army, year after year.
But the reason Demons were fundamentally different from Chaos was that they had their own system of order and Law. And because of the messy, complicated relationship between the Celestial God’s Shadow and the Divine Ancestor, the Demons could easily twist the essence of the Law and promote their own.
And, believe it or not, it was quite effective. It wasn’t because the faith of the realm’s people was so weak, but because the Demons were too unique. They possessed traits from the same source as the Divine Ancestor and could release their own Domain, which could directly twist the minds of less resolute mortals.
In their eyes, gods and mortals were separated, and chaos was rampant. The Celestial God’s Shadow was the incarnation of the Divine Ancestor sent down to the Mortal World. ’What’s wrong with following the Divine Ancestor’s incarnation?’
In the Demon-occupied City in the Lake, at least half of the original inhabitants had become followers of the Celestial God’s Shadow. Compared to the loss of territory, the massive decline in the faithful population was a blow that cut the Thousand Laws Royal Court to the bone.
However, no matter the reason, the Royal Court would never accept it. For the believers of the Realm of Order, starving to death was a small matter, but losing one’s integrity was a grave one!
If you had assimilated into another Realm of Order, it would have been somewhat excusable; there wasn’t much friction between the few righteous Celestial Gods. But becoming Demon Believers? That was a universal taboo, even worse than being a Demon Practitioner!
Regardless of any other reasons, mortals who believed in Demons were no longer ordinary mortals. They had to be dealt with harshly!
Amithren and the other Royal Court Elves resolutely stripped their traitorous kinsmen of their humanity, branding them as lackeys of the Demons. Naturally, they would show no mercy.
"Counterattack! Fire at will!"
The Wave-Breaking Ships at the front slowed their advance. The constructs rooted to their decks swiveled their cannons, and together with the Royal Court Mages on board, they unleashed a brilliant torrent of Magic Flow onto the Cannibal Bone Demons on both banks, engulfing the Elf vassal troops along with them.
The flesh and blood of mortals were nothing before a warship’s heavy firepower. Unless one had reached a Tier above Exemplar, they stood no chance against the repeated bombardment.
The Bone Demon kin did possess the strength of an Exemplar, capable of taking a Magic Burst Bomb to the face with only light injuries. But if one shot couldn’t finish them, what about two, three, or four? How could they possibly handle that?
Your bodies dissipate like snowflakes, while our ammunition is endless!
There weren’t many Bone Demon troops to begin with. In truth, the Master of Decay hadn’t had much time since breaking free and hadn’t managed to convert many offspring and kin. They stood no chance against the Royal Court’s army, which had been amassing its strength for a long time, and their defenses were crushed with ease.
Then, the fleet, now in a full state of war, surged forward triumphantly toward the City in the Lake, whose silhouette was now visible.
However, as a node of the Grand Ensemble, the City in the Lake was essentially a creation of a Celestial God and would not be so easily conquered.
Upon the slightly murky and deathly still surface of the lake, towering spires stood guard around the center of the City in the Lake. These towers, capable of drawing upon the node’s Magic Power, formed a veritable wall of sighs.
They raised shields, unleashed firepower, and even buffed their legions. With this home-field advantage, the defensive fleet outside the City in the Lake engaged the Royal Court’s punitive expedition head-on.
The Demon Believers had also been part of the Royal Court’s regular army before, so it was a battle of well-matched opponents. Even though their numbers were far smaller than the Royal Court’s forces, they could still maintain a defensive posture by relying on the City in the Lake.
This was because the towers garrisoning the City in the Lake were simply too deadly. Each time the prisms floating at their peaks were struck by a sonic chord, they would erupt with a laser beam like concentrated daylight, vaporizing the lake’s surface and tearing through hulls.
Even with shields, a ship couldn’t withstand more than a few direct hits from the lasers. Once its defenses were breached, the next shot would mean its complete disintegration.
Therefore, their only choice was to press forward relentlessly, charging into the defenders’ formation to limit the output of the tower prisms.
The Wave-Breaking Ships risked destruction by the tower prisms’ lasers, finally making contact with the enemy fleet the instant their shields shattered. With a violent collision, boarding battles erupted on the wide decks.
"Traitors! Cowards! Scum!"
A Royal Court Elf Military Officer roared at his kinsmen who shared his same face, his Rune Short Sword stirring ripples in the air with the coordinated movements of his comrades.
"You things who have betrayed the Divine Ancestor don’t deserve to live! Kill them! Leave no one alive!"
"For the Emperor! For the Royal Court!"
Compared to the righteously indignant Royal Court troops, the aura of the Demon followers was no weaker. Or rather, they were simply puppets whose minds had been bewildered. Faced with the fury of their kinsmen, they chose to respond with blades.
"Shut up! We’re the ones fighting for the Divine Ancestor! You reject the rule of the Divine Ancestor’s incarnation—what right do you have to represent Him!"
"You scum from the Royal Court should have died long ago!"
One after another, the Wave-Breaking Ships clashed in the waters surrounding the City in the Lake, their hulls and decks forming a nearly unbroken battlefield.
