Book 2: Chapter 50
Book 2: Chapter 50
"Get your hands off her!" Jasmine yelled, her voice coming out as a shock to us all. The moment she yelled, I could feel Josh struggling with himself to break free from the paralysis, but it was hopeless. She kicked away Simon's hands, breaking his grip on Lenora, who was still stunned and unable to understand what was happening or why Simon was supporting Anselm.
Jasmine's kick was strong and had left Simon struggling to recover from the pain it caused him, but on regaining his strength, he tried to go for Lenora once again, but Jasmine was quick to stand in front of her, acting as a barrier between them with her fists balled in front of her and her stance firm, ready for a fight. I must say, her bravery is quite commendable, but as long as she's an ordinary wolf, there's no help she can provide in this place unless she does what is wise and runs far away with Lenora.
I try to scream with every ounce of strength in me and yell at both of them to run far away, for Jasmine to grab Lenora and run away by force, but my voice only comes out as a whisper and gets lost in the wind.
Simon tried to fight with Jasmine, but before anyone could start throwing punches, Anselm was quick to intervene.
"That's enough," he groaned, removing his legs from my back as he stood up from his seat. With his body standing tall, the smirk on his face grew wider as he made his way to Lenora.
"What have you done to them?" She asked, lifting her head to look him straight in the eyes as her brows furrowed. His larger figure immediately covered her little frame, but she didn't seem to be intimidated; rather, her burning gaze never left him.
"I haven't done anything permanent to your lover and his boy, but to your friend..."
"What have you done to him?" She growled, her anger growing. I looked up at her, and for a moment those beautiful brown eyes pooled up with tears, but her anger was quick to surpass the emotions she was feeling.
"Didn't he tell you? And I thought he was in love with you," Anselm said with a sigh before kissing his teeth. My jaws clenched as I swallowed my breath.
My eyes shifted to Simon, who was standing like a complete puppet, before shifting back to Lenora. Her fierce eyes now hold sadness, confusion, and anger, but somehow I could feel that Anselm's words about Simon loving her seemed to have weighed her down. I hate to see someone else affect her mood this way.
"Oh, is this conversation awkward or you also didn't tell your mate that you made love to him?" Anselm said, laughing.
My ears erected as my gaze remained on Lenora's face, filled with anxiousness and a tinge of anger. The thought of someone else touching her makes my blood boil, and all that I want to do is burst that mouth of his for saying such words, but I can't even bring myself to move my body. I am powerless, and there's no point in feeling angry; all I can do is wait for her to shut his mouth with the truth.
She couldn't have done something like that. I know her, Anselm is only trying to cause a rift between us. He's a demon, and he's here to steal her away from me and for himself, but I won't let that happen.
"How… How did you know?" She asked, and her lips quivered without discarding his statement. Could it be true? It can't be.
Every ounce of fibre and muscle in my body tried to break free from this paralysis and take Lenora out of here. I don't want to believe that she actually did something with Simon; I want to believe that Anselm is currently messing with my head and Lenora wouldn't betray me, but deep down, I can't help but worry that she could have actually done it. Could that also be the reason why my beast was enraged the moment it saw Simon and Lenora together? Or could the reason be because he was Anselm's property? It has to be the latter; Lenora is mine and not to be shared.
"I know, because his soul belongs to me, and I know of every single thing that he does, including the time he tried to save one of your prisoners who also belonged to me for his sake."
"He was so in love with you that he didn't want to be controlled by me anymore, but only if you knew how many times he tried to kill you," Anselm added, his grin widening at the sight of my misery and Lenora's shock.
This is what he wanted; he wants to cause a rift between us and mess with our minds before attacking us. I won't let him succeed.
"Lenora, get out of here! Run!" I tried to yell, but once again, my voice came out as a whisper and was lost in thin air before it could travel to her.
"What do you want from me?" She asked, her voice returning to its fierceness as she looked him dead in the eye. She has managed to shove aside all of the hurtful words he said about her, and I envy her. Here I am, unable to get over the sham words he said about her. Over the past few months, she has grown a lot and is no longer the naïve girl who put me through hell when I first met her.
"I want you."
"You will never have me, and neither will your filthy hands ever touch me," she growled.
"But you let Simon touch you; he belongs to me, so technically I touched you," Anselm said with a smirk. He knows exactly what he is doing by talking that way.
"He's not you; you're a filthy and disgusting monster. A bastard who wasn't wanted by his father"
"You're trespassing," Diane snapped. I hadn't realized that she was in the room with us.
"How lovely! I never expected less from you either," Lenora said, referring to Diane.
"You seem to have a lot of guts for someone whose power heavily depends on her mate. I want you, and I will have you," Anselm growled, his lips twitching.
"Don't you want to save your lover from this depressing state? Surrender the throne and yourself, and nothing bad will happen to the people you love."
"You must have isolated yourself with maniacs for so long that you have deluded yourself into thinking that your fantasies will come to pass," Lenora sneered.
"I have had enough of you; one more word, and you'll be like your lover over there," he threatened.
"Or your supposed lover over here," he added, pointing towards Simon.
Lenora isn't the type to handle threats, and she does the exact thing she is being warned about. I can't let her do something irrational, even though I might have also made that mistake. I don't know how, but Anselm has a way of winning a fight before it starts. The best thing she can do for us both is to run, to run as far as she can and away from this pack.
"Please run." I tried to speak again, but my voice only came out as a whisper. I tried to reach her mind, but she happened to be blocking me out of it. Why doesn't she know that the best thing she can do right now is to run away? Even if I am unable to run with her right now, I promise to find her again, but for the sake of her health and that of the unborn child, I can only wish she would run.
"Please, Lenora," I begged again, but my whisper fell on deaf ears.
Josh was right beside me, struggling to take control of his body once again, but his strength was unmatched by whatever Anselm might have done to us.
"There's nothing you can do to me." She talked back. But her aura had changed; she wasn't as fierce as she was but rather was enveloped in sadness, and her words came out as a stutter. What happened to her? Could Anselm have already gotten to her?
"Oh, we'll be sure about that," Anselm replied with a smirk and with his hand behind his back. I could see him moving his fingers in an unusual manner, and at first I thought of what he could be doing, but it didn't take me long to realize that he was about to do to Lenora the same thing he did to me.
"Lenora run!" I yelled, my voice finally breaking free from whatever Anselm did to me, but it was too late. Anselm had already reached out his hands to Lenora, but before Lenora could take the hit, Jasmine jumped right in front of her.
I was expecting her to fall to the floor, but she managed to surprise both me and Anselm as she grabbed Lenora by the arm and ran straight out of the room leaving us stunned. Anselm's trick didn't work on her. How did his powers not affect a common wolf like Jasmine but affect me in an instant?
"Bring them both!" He ordered Simon, and in no time, his puppet scurried away to find Lenora.
LENORA'S POV
"Your highness, are you okay?" Jasmine asked after she dragged me to an unfamiliar place, but all I could tell was that we were nowhere near Anselm, and I doubt if he would be able to find me here.
"Did you hear him?" I asked.
"Yes, he wants to have you and was going to hurt you badly," she replied.
"No, I wasn't talking about Anselm. Did you hear Simon?" I asked. I lifted my chin to look at Jasmine, who was standing right in front of me while I was sitting on a large log of wood.
"No, he didn't say anything," she replied. Confirming that I might have just happened to be hearing things, but once again, his words were so clear in my mind like a mind link that it makes it almost impossible for me to think he never said anything. But how is it possible that he can communicate with me through his mind if it was only my mate that was meant to hear and speak to me through my mind?
Lenora, please run far away. I don't want to hurt you. I don't want to lay my hands on you, nor do I want Anselm to get his hands on you. Please run far away. Please," he repeatedly said in my head while I stood in front of Anselm.
I shifted my gaze away from that of Anselm and to his face, but his face held no emotions. I was confused as to whether or not the voice actually came from him, but the moment a single tear drop flowed down his cheeks, I realized that it must have been from him.
My heart broke; it shattered into a thousand pieces at the sight of Simon being helpless. He might be working for Anselm right now, but I could tell that he would have never done this in his right state of mind. Something horrible must have led to Simon being under Anselm's control.
At that point, all I wanted to do was reach out to him, hold his hands, and run away with him. All I wanted was to take him away from Anselm and to a safe place before coming back to deal with Anselm and save my husband, but I knew it would be pointless. I knew there was no way that would be successful, even though I wished I could do something to help him, something to bring him out of his misery, something to save him. It's not his fault that he's the way he is.
"Did Simon say something?" Jasmine asked.
"That's no longer important. How do I save my husband and my people if I keep running? I have to go back to the pack house and face Anselm."
"Your highness, please wait." Jasmine stopped me from getting up from the log. The stress from running away seemed to have weighed me down, as I felt a sharp pain in my tummy, causing me to sit back down.
"There's no time to wait; Anselm would have had all his men searching for us right now," I protested, running my fingers through my hair before settling my hands on my waist for support.
"I'm on your side, Lenora. I am your friend, and I'm not stopping you from going over there and saving your mate, but you need to know that you're pregnant and due any time soon, so you need to consider your child. You also can't barge in there and expect to take down Anselm without a plan," Jasmine said.
She's calling me by my name for the first time since I knew her, and I must say I prefer it. Also, she has a point. I can't just barge in there without a plan, and with everything that my child and I have gone through, I'm unsure if I'm willing to put it through another stress that could potentially harm us both.
"But what do I do?" I asked, exhausted and burying my face in my palm. There has to be something I can do. I can't just sit around and wait here for a miracle to happen.
"How am I supposed to take down Anslem as a heavily pregnant woman while he possesses the strongest powers in the world? How do I even think I'd get anywhere close to him if he was able to turn Alaric into a paralytic?" I asked with warm tears streaming down my cheeks, but a cold hand met my face.
"I don't think I'm fit for this, Jasmine," I cried.
"You don't have to necessarily take down Anselm; you just have to bring peace and do what is right," she said.
"Doing what is right will be taking down that monster and watching his soul leave his lifeless body right under my feet."
"Moreover, I don’t fucking care about bringing peace if my mate is being held hostage by a monster." I snapped in anger, but deep down, my emotions were filled with sadness, and I couldn't help but cry.
"But it's not possible to defeat him," I added, with my voice almost like a whisper. I cannot imagine the pain that Alaric would be going through at a time like this. I don't know how it would feel for him to be unable to move his body or for him to watch his brother almost attack me without being able to do anything about it. Hell, I don't even know if he's still alive right now in Anselm's custody. I can only pray that he's hanging in there.
I lifted my teary eyes to see Jasmine staring at me with a warm smile on her face.
"I think it's time for you to know the truth about yourself." She said, Her smile was still bright as she wiped away the tears from my face.
"What truth don't I know about myself?" I asked, and I swear if she's trying to be a motivational speaker in a time like this where all our lives are in danger, I'll make her regret it.
"You're the chosen one," she answered, earning a sneer from me and causing my brows to furrow in both anger and confusion.
Am I being mocked?
