Book 2: Chapter 12
Book 2: Chapter 12
"What the hell was I thinking?" I growled in frustration as I realised that I was unable to open the thick, heavy doors of my suite.
"Why did they have to make it so hard and heavy?" I groaned again, but my noise seemed to have attracted both Miriam and Evelyn as they approached me.
"What's making you so upset, my lady?" Miriam asked.
"I can't seem to open this damn door!" I cursed as I slammed on it, but my hands were the ones that felt the effect rather than the door.
"It can't be that hard," Evelyn said, as I shot her a death glare. If it wasn't hard, then I would have opened it with ease.
"Why don't you come try it yourself?" I sarcastically suggested, but she didn't seem to get it as she walked towards me and reached for the door.
Push, pull, push, she attempted all, but the door didn't move an inch.
"Wow!" she exclaimed.
"What?"
"I can't open the door," she said, her lips parted in surprise as my brows cringed.
"No shit sherlock", I responded before leaning on the wooden door as I didn't know who I could call for and no servants were seen close to my suite.
After a while, I decided to ask for help from any servant since that was my only option. In no time, I was in the main part of the castle, where a lot of servants could be seen attending to one chore or the other.
I looked around for any male servant who was hefty enough to open the door, and the moment I spotted one, I went for him.
"Excuse me, sir." I addressed him but got no response. He was turned back at me, and I suggested he might not have heard me, so I went to his front to address him, but he immediately shifted his gaze.
I was shocked as to what might have resulted in him ignoring me, so I ordered him to stop.
"Why are you ignoring me on purpose?" I asked, with my temper already thin.
"I'll never do that, my princess."
"You just did." I confronted him.
"Forgive me, your highness, but I, as well as other servants, are forbidden to speak to you, and right now, I'm already in serious trouble," he answered.
"Why are they not allowed to speak to me and what could be their reason for this? Could this be the reason why Simon was the only one attending to me? " I asked myself but shoved the thought away, as I would bring it up with either of the royal family.
"But how am I supposed to open the door of my suite?" I inquired, but when I noticed the drop of sweat on his face on a cold night, I realised that he was being watched by the rest of the servants and was uncomfortable.
I reassured him, "Just help me with the door and I promise nothing bad will happen to you."
"I'm sorry, your highness, but only the beta or the prince can help you with this," he said before storming off.
"Great, I'm trapped outside," I said to myself as I left for my suite. There was no way the prince would come close to me, and Simon, on the other hand, was badly wounded by the king.
"Did you find any help?" Evelyn asked as she spotted me coming.
I fixed my gaze on her before turning to look at my back with my hands on my forehead like I was searching for someone.
"Oh no, no one came with me," I sarcastically replied, with a stress on my last few words.
"Oh," she replied, as I sighed in frustration. These girls are just on another level of dumbness.
"You can stay in our room for the time being," Miriam said as I sighed but had no choice but to accept and follow them into their room, which was just next door.
As we got to the door of their room, I watched as Miriam had opened the similar thick wooden door with ease, but why was mine hard to open and who the hell built the door thinking that the recipient of the room was going to be a muscular person?
Unlike my suite, theirs was way smaller and had all of the furniture stuffed together with no space to walk in the room. They also had their own private kitchen, but there was no balcony. Their room just had this tall window that was above the bed.
I was more than tired as I crashed on the bed, not even wanting to remove the dinner gown that I wore. My day had been long, and it's surprising that I had a lot of things that happened in just a day.
I'm glad they don't know me in this place and most certainly don't want me dead. They also seemed like genuine, nice people, except for Prince Holland, who has a different character, but I won't blame him for it as I know what it feels like for a parent to favour one child over another.
"I'm taking the bed space" I said to Evelyn and Miriam as I made myself comfortable on the bed covered with cotton sheets while they both shared the sofa. I kind of felt bad to see the both of them sharing the small space as we all had a long day, but to make myself feel better, I told myself that it would be unfair to sleep beside one of the girls while the other slept alone on the sofa.
"Goodnight," I groaned in a coarse voice as they both returned the greeting, and in no time, I drifted off to sleep.

Chills spread all over my body as I brought my knees to my chest in order to keep myself warm, but the cold night wasn't doing any justice and the sound of the owls' hooting was making it difficult for me to sleep as my body became awake in the dark room.
The moment I was fully awake, I noticed something strange in the room, as it felt like I wasn't alone. I knew Miriam and Evelyn were on the other side of the room with me, but it still felt as if someone else was here and I was being watched. I was starting to perceive a faint smell that wasn't familiar but smelled like it was from the castle but not from either of us in the room.
I was starting to freak out as my chest rose and fell, but I tried to comfort myself by thinking that it was just in my head and no one was in the room with me, but my body was saying a different thing as the hairs on my skin stood up and goosebumps appeared on my skin. Someone was definitely watching me in this room.
"Miriam" I called for her name in order to confirm I was alone or, in other cases, scare the person away by making them know that I was awake, but Miriam didn't respond to her name either.
"Miriam." I called her name again with more power in my tone, but was cut off mid-sentence by a voice.
"Why bother her?" The voice said as I screamed in terror and grabbed the nearest weapon I could find beside me before realising that the voice was familiar and it belonged to Simon.
"Why do you want to wake the whole kingdom up by 3am?" He asked again as the lights were turned on by him and I could clearly see his face.
He was standing at the end of the room beside the door as he wore only trousers while his chest and neck area were covered in bandages from the wound that was inflicted on him.
"Why are you here at this hour of the night?" I yelled at him with a fierce face but in lowercase as I wouldn't want to wake the girls up.
He didn't answer me, but rather, his eyes trailed to my right hand as a smirk appeared on his face. I had no idea of what he was staring at, but on bringing my eyes to my right hand, I realised why he had a smirk on his face.
Out of reflex, I grabbed the nearest object beside me, but why the fuck did I grab a spoon, and why the hell was a spoon on the bedside table?
I didn't want him to see my shame as I quickly returned the spoon back to the table, but on looking at his face, he still had a smirk on it.
"You didn't answer me. Why are you here at this time? " I asked again.
"To watch over you," he answered, as the smirk disappeared from his face and was replaced with the usual emotionless face.
"Why?"
"To protect you"
"Why?"
"You ask too many questions, princess Addison," he replied with a stern tone.
"You, tell me why you couldn't keep up with a simple rule and sleep in your room. You weren't allowed to be in others' rooms or others in your room, and don't you think it's too soon to be a rebel? "He said, as my brows furrowed in annoyance and confusion.
"Why do you think that you can control what I do and how the hell was I supposed to enter my room when the doors are mightier than an elephant?" I snapped back at him but then turned to look at the girls, hoping that I had not woken them up with my voice, and luckily, they were still sound asleep.
But how could they possibly be asleep?
"Next time, call me and I'll help you out," he said, but in a much calmer tone.
"I had no clue where you were and you are obviously injured."
"My room is opposite yours," he answered as I mouthed an "oh". I hadn't thought of whose room was in the door right opposite mine, but I should have known it was his, since the servant had said that it was either him or the prince that were allowed in this side of the castle, and I doubt that the prince would want his room right opposite mine.
"Also, it's a full moon tonight and I'm healing quickly." He answered, but something about his tone with me changed, as he was starting to sound casual by answering my questions, unlike when we just met and he wouldn't even say a word.
"Oh," I answered again, as I was trying to get used to his recent act of formality.
"Let us go to your room," he suggested.
"Why, I'm comfortable here," I replied sharply.
"I don't care about your comfort, but you can't be seen anywhere but your room," he said, but his tone was more threatening. I had thought he was getting formal with me, but I guess I spoke too soon.
"I'm not leaving here until you give me a reason why I can't stay here."
"It's for your own good and for the good of Edessa and Latvera," he answered, but his answer only made me more confused. I tried to argue more with him, but I was feeling sleepy and needed to rest as I stood up from the bed and followed him out.
We left the girls' room and, shockingly, they were both still asleep as I started to question myself if they were truly werewolves as they had no instincts to warn them of danger. On getting to my room, Simon opened the door efficiently, even though he was injured. I walked into the room but was shocked to see him closing the door behind him as he entered my room with me.
"Why aren't you going to your room?" I asked.
"To make sure you don't leave this place," he responded as I hissed at him, but almost flinched as the door forcefully barged opened.
"If it isn't the bastard of a son in my fiancé's room," Holland's voice resonated as his claps echoed in the room.
