Chapter 27
Chapter 27
KAEL’S POV
The look on Celestina's face as she stepped off the seaplane made every tense moment with her father worth it. Her normally composed features transformed completely—eyes widening as she drew in a sharp breath, lips parting in silent awe. She stood motionless on the wooden dock, taking in the breathtaking panorama of the Maldives—crystal turquoise waters stretching to the horizon, pristine white beaches that glimmered in the midday sun, and lush tropical vegetation swaying gently in the salt-tinged breeze. The usual tension that tightened her shoulders had melted away in an instant.
"What do you think?" I asked, though her expression already told me everything. A familiar warmth spread through my chest as I watched her—this rare, unguarded version of Celestina I'd been fighting to uncover.
"It's... beautiful," she breathed, wonder filling her voice. Her fingers reached up to push a strand of hair that the ocean breeze had dislodged from her careful styling. For once, she didn't immediately fix it back into place, letting it dance across her cheek.
"Only the best for you," I replied, allowing myself a small smile. My hand hovered near the small of her back, not quite touching but close enough to feel the heat radiating from her sun-warmed skin through the thin fabric of her dress.
As we entered our private overwater villa, Celestina turned to me with an arched brow, her eyes sweeping across the luxurious accommodations. "This seems a little extravagant." Her fingers trailed along the polished wooden railing, leaving invisible traces I found myself wanting to follow.
I shrugged, setting our bags down on the cool tile floor with a soft thud and drinking in her reaction. The slight widening of her eyes, the way she bit her lower lip—small tells most would miss. "You deserve extravagant."
The villa was everything I'd hoped for—floor-to-ceiling windows revealing panoramic ocean views that shifted from turquoise to deep blue, a private infinity pool blending seamlessly with the horizon, and wooden steps leading directly into the warm lagoon below. Late afternoon sunlight filtered through the glass, casting golden patterns across the polished floors. But nothing compared to watching Celestina as she explored our temporary sanctuary, her usual guarded expression giving way to genuine excitement.
She moved from room to room, each discovery punctuated by small sounds of appreciation. The tension that usually held her spine rigid had dissolved, replaced by a fluidity to her movements I hadn't seen in years. When she discovered the glass floor section in the living area revealing fish swimming beneath us, the smile that spread across her face made my heart stutter.
The next morning, I stood waist-deep in the crystal-clear waters, droplets clinging to my chest and shoulders. The sun warmed my back as tiny fish darted around my legs, their silvery bodies catching the light. I adjusted my snorkeling mask, already in place, as I held out my hand to Celestina, who lingered hesitantly on the wooden deck, her toes curling over the edge.
"Are you sure this thing is safe?" she asked, tugging at her mask straps, fingers fidgeting with the black silicone. The uncertainty in her voice contrasted with the determined set of her jaw.
I couldn't help but grin, enjoying this rare display of vulnerability. "Absolutely. Unless you're scared of fish, in which case..." I let the sentence hang in the air between us, a gentle taunt.
"I'm not scared of fish," she retorted with an eye roll that did nothing to diminish her smile. The morning sun caught in her dark hair, pulling out auburn highlights I'd never noticed before. "I'm just questioning your expertise in organizing water activities."
"Come on, Celestina," I teased, water lapping against my waist as I shifted closer to the deck, "the ocean's not going to bite." My outstretched hand remained steady, patient.
With a dramatic sigh that betrayed her excitement, she sat on the edge, the water darkening the hem of her swimsuit. She hesitated for just a moment before sliding into the water beside me. The soft gasp that escaped her lips as the warm water enveloped her body sent an unexpected jolt through me.
"It's warmer than I expected," she said, her voice lower, almost private despite there being no one else for hundreds of yards.
The moment we submerged our faces, a new world revealed itself—kaleidoscopic coral gardens teeming with marine life in every imaginable color. The gentle current swayed the delicate coral branches, creating an underwater dance synchronized to the rhythm of the waves above. I swam close to her, our arms occasionally brushing, sending ripples of awareness across my skin as I pointed out remarkable sights—a majestic sea turtle gliding by with unhurried grace, clownfish darting among swaying anemone tentacles, and starfish scattered across the sandy bottom like fallen stars.
Through the clear water, I could see Celestina's eyes wide with wonder behind her mask. Her dark hair floated around her face in a halo, making her look otherworldly against the vibrant backdrop of marine life. When a school of bright yellow-and-blue fish swam directly between us, her hand instinctively reached for mine, fingers intertwining underwater for several heartbeats before she seemed to realize what she'd done and pulled away.
When we finally surfaced, Celestina was laughing, genuinely laughing—a sound so rare and precious I wished I could capture it. Droplets of water clung to her eyelashes like diamonds, catching the sunlight as she pushed her mask up onto her forehead.
"Alright, I'll admit it," she said, treading water, her cheeks flushed with exertion and delight. "That was incredible."
I leaned against the deck, my arms folded on the warm wood, enjoying the rare sound of her unbridled joy. Water streamed from my hair down my face, but I couldn't be bothered to wipe it away. "See? You just needed a little push."
"If you call 'nagging' a push, then sure," she countered, but the sparkle in her eyes belied her words. For a moment, she floated on her back, face turned toward the endless blue sky, completely at ease. The woman who carried the weight of diplomatic responsibilities on her shoulders had temporarily disappeared, replaced by someone lighter, freer.
And in that moment, watching her, I knew there was nowhere else in the world I would rather be.
